Commemorating United Nations Day With Ambassadors for Peace (WFWP Luxembourg)

Written by: Reinhild Frank

Every year, WFWP Luxembourg collaborates with the LKA on projects for Korean War veterans. Reinhild Frank, President of WFWP Luxembourg, has been a member of the Korean Luxembourg Association (LKA) with her husband, since 1982.

The annual event which took place at the National Monument "Gelle Fra" (Golden Lady) is held every year on United Nations Day which falls on October 23. The LKA organizes this special event because it is in fact the main event connected to the Korean War. As the United States was initiating the move to defend Korea worldwide, mobilizing 16 nations to defend Korea, the United Nations Day was chosen to honor the veterans and to remember the two soldiers, Roger Stütz and Robert Mores, who lost their lives among 86 soldiers in the Korean War.

WFWP Luxembourg invited three Ambassadors for Peace to commemorate this special day, Dr. Guy Aime Tanonkou; Mrs. Rahsan Celik; and Mrs. Veronique Wilhelm. Ambassadors for Peace was an initiative started by the co-founders of WFWPI, Dr. Hak Ja Han Moon and her late husband, Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon, based on a candidate’s contribution to peace projects.

WFWP Luxembourg is rather small, like the country but its location serves as a great mediator position. The capital of Luxembourg is Luxembourg City. As a country with four languages (Luxembourgish, French, German and English), there are many foreigners and 30 percent of the population is Portuguese. It is a "melting pot" similar to New York. We also have a part of the European Parliament, European Commission and European Court. Geographically, Luxembourg is placed between Strassbourg, Brussels and the European Court in Den Haag. For this reason, it was truly an opportunity to celebrate United Nations Day in Luxembourg.
