Food Project (Nutrition Guidance Classes)
Summary: In 1994, WFWP began providing soybean powder for malnourished
children under age five, in Ndra City. Nutrition Guidance Classes using
soybean powder were implemented in January 1995, at two clinics in the city
of Lusaka, capital of Zambia, with the help of local doctors and nurses.
These classes are introduced to mothers of children under age 5, who are
identified as underweight during a regular check-up at the clinic. The
classes provide children with porridge made of soybean powder, and check
individual weight increase or decrease. After giving instructions on how to
make the porridge and feed the children, enough soybean powder is provided
to last for a week for mothers to feed their children at home. If they
follow instructions, the children reach standard weight within three or four
months, and are able to graduate from the classes.
New Developments: Classes expanded to 3 clinics in 2005. It works well
while the mothers are being provided with soybean powder, but when they run
out, they come back to the clinic. Some mothers who were part of the
classes received training to become Nutrition Promoters. This system proved
effective because these Promoters actually experienced the program
themselves and a sense of bonding was created among the mothers.
