Non-Formal Education Child Support Program
Management of "One Hope Garden" - Primary Education Class
Outline: In 1997, free literacy education was launched in the Warada
District 10 of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, for children who could
not afford to go to school despite being of school age. It was officially
accredited by the government in 2001, as an elementary school. After three
years of education, students are supplied with transfer fees, uniforms and
school supplies, and are admitted to the fourth grade in the Addis Ababa
Municipal Elementary School. The courses are offered in two shifts; one in
the morning and one in the afternoon. Amharic, the official language of
Ethiopia, math, English, social studies, art, music, and physical education
are taught. Since 2003, foster parents program was implemented to support
school fees for poverty-stricken children.
New Developments: In September 2005, a total of 85 third and fourth grade
students transferred to the fourth and fifth grade of public elementary
schools. In 2006, all 42 students in the third grade transferred to the
fourth grade in three different public elementary schools. The school
building relocated in July. In the same month, foster parents from Japan
who came on a study tour met with their foster children.
