Management of the "Sayed Jamalludin Afghan School"
Education of Afghan Refugee Children in India
Outline: The school was opened in New Delhi, capital of India, in 1994, for
Afghan refugee children living in India, aged 9-20, in response to a request
from the parents. The school offered elementary school level classes twice
a week. For six months, the school provided the same level of education
offered in other schools of Afghanistan, including the Dari language,
culture and history of Afghanistan, and ethics classes. The Foster Parents
Program for students from needy families was also implemented.
New Developments: Because of a significant decrease in the number of Afghan
refugees living in India and the change of circumstances in Afghanistan,
support was terminated in September 2005. The school was handed over to the
Afghan people for self-management. A total of approximately 2,600 students
studied in this school.
