Zambia: WFWP Zambia General Meeting

WFWP Zambia members gather in Lusaka to discuss 2017 results and plans for new year

WFWP Zambia held their annual general meeting on June 2, 2018 at the Peace Embassy in Lusaka. Around 39 participants, including Mrs. Susan Kone, Vice President of WFWP Africa, as the guest of honor, and WFWP members from Lusaka and the surrounding provinces.

The first speaker was Mrs. Eunice Sanfo, WFWP Zambia Vice President. In her introductory message, she thanked everyone for coming to this important meeting and emphasized the importance of the roles women play in society.

Mrs. Annabelle Banda, WFWP Zambia Secretary-General, then gave a report on WFWP Zambia's activities over the past year, including feeding programs in public clinics, sewing classes for vulnerable women and girls and fundraising.

Mrs. Yuka Mwanza, WFWP Treasurer, gave the annual financial report. Mrs. Sheila Chanda Mwenda, President of WFWP Zambia, gave the report of activities carried out during last year and the beginning of the year 2018. In her report, she mentioned about making contact with various women leaders, such as the Hon. Elisabeth Phiri, Member of Parliament of the Kanyama constituency in Lusaka, who visited community schools and an orphanage in Ngombe. She further revealed the five new sub-committees, including public relations. The Peace and Prosperity sub-committe will be headed by Mrs. Sheila Mwenda, fundraising will continue to be headed by Mrs. Kiyomi Wakasaka, while the committee for Marriage and Family is being headed by Mrs. Odette Kunda. Health and Environment will be headed by Mrs. Jacqueline Mutewa, and finally, the committee for Education and Home Economics will be headed by Mrs. Eunice Mbulo Sanfo.

Mrs. Mwenda further appealed to the WFWP Zambia members to register themselves in the committees that they feel they could most contribute to the development of WFWP Zambia. Finally, she advised each committee to draw out their budget for activities.

Mrs. Odette Kunda, Marriage and Family sub-committee chair, explained how her biggest priority will be visiting families in their homes to support them on a personal level.

Mrs. Susan Kone, Vice-President of WFWP Africa, thanked WFWP Zambia for their hard work and dedication in 2017 and for hosting this meeting. She further encouraged the mothers present, who represent all women of Zambia, to care for and love each other. She also explained the different projects being implemented by WFWP Africa, such as helping malnourished children. She concluded her remarks by encouraging the participants to invest in growing WFWP Africa's membership.

The program closed with Mrs. Audrey Mashikini, who thanked WFWP Zambia for their activities and also encouraged participants to join the different sub-committees of the organization to make a strong women's movement in Zambia.
