DMZ as Future Peace Zone in Korean Peninsula Webinar

In 2021 the Republic of Korea commemorates the 71st Anniversary of the Korean War. Many steps have been taken by civil society organizations to reunify and bring peace to the two countries. WFWPI will introduce speakers who have been continuously working to promote positive change and share their works related to the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

SPEAKERS:
Dr. Jongchoon Woo
Dr. Woo, a Korean forester and educator, received his Ph.D. in Forest Management from the Freiburg University in Germany. He was awarded the DMZ Peace prize, the Society Service Grand Prize (educational sector) for educational excellence through his contribution to the realization of green environment education. Currently, he serves as Professor Emeritus at Kangwon National University in South Korea.
Dr. Seung-ho Lee
Dr. Lee is President of The DMZ Forum, Inc., a US-registered non-profit organization that aims to transform the Korean DMZ into an International Peace Zone. He was Adjunct Professor and Senior Researcher at the New York University and graduated from the School of Public Service. He also worked for the New York State Legislative Commission on Critical Transportation Choices. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the State University of New York at Albany.
Dr. Chun-Fang Wu
Dr. Wu has been working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Peace Research Center of National Quemoy University in Taiwan after getting a Ph.D. in Sociology at Seoul National University in South Korea. Her doctoral thesis explored how Kinmen island repositions in cross-strait relations and play a role in maintaining exchanges from the perspective of cross-strait tourism exchanges. Further explore the peace process between China and Taiwan, and the role of Kinmen as a peace promotion media.
Mme. Hiroko Oizumi
Mme. Oizumi is a Councilor at Mitsui-Sumitomo Insurance Welfare Foundation. She was a Member of the Parliament of Japan (House of Representatives) and Vice Governor of Yamaguchi prefecture in Japan. She worked as Director of Social Welfare Bureau of Ministry of Health and Welfare and Director of Children & Family Bureau of MHW and also was a Planning Evaluation Officer in the Mid-North India Office of UNICEF and Cabinet Counselor for Aging society problem in Japan.

Mme. Gloria Miranda Dantas
Mme. Dantas was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina. She is the Sub-regional Director of the Women’s Federation for World Peace in South America. As a person concerned about peace and harmony in the world she has organized events of different organizations such as CAUSA and AULA (Association for the Union of Latin America) in Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.

The Role of Women in Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding

We will explore the challenges and victories of movements in conflict zones across the world to understand the capacity and challenges involved for women and youth when they take an active role in leading efforts for reconciliation and conflict transformation. Panelists will present their best practice successes in the decision-making processes that have contributed to effectively tackling the enormous crisis in their diverse areas of responsibility.

SPEAKERS:
Dr. Karambu Ringera
Dr. Ringera is the Founder and President of the International Peace Initiatives. She is dedicated to supporting and funding initiatives that mitigate the effects of war, disease, poverty, and discrimination. For her work to uplift orphans and women living with HIV/AIDS from marginalization to self-resilience, she was awarded the 2019 Global Impact Award by WellAware. In 2015 she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by her alma mater, the University of Denver.
Prof. Ilda Maria Menezes de Araújo Novo
Prof. Novo is Vice-President of CDS-PP Municipal Political Committee of Viana do Castelo. In 2019 as Vice-President of the Parliamentary Friendship Group Portugal-Korea was invited by the Korean Ambassador of The Republic of Korea in Portugal to join The Speaker of the National Assembly in ROK in 2019. She was also the President of the Directive Council of Cerva Preparatory School and Representative from the Ministry of Education in the Municipal Education Councils of Arcos de Valdevez, Caminha, Monção, Paredes de Coura, Valença, and Vila Nova de Cerveira.
Dr. Bernadia Irawati Tjandradewi
Dr. Bernadia is the first woman Secretary-General of the United Cities and Local Governments(UCLG)’s regional section. She has been working in urban development and related fields for more than 15 years. She began her career at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and afterward CITYNET in Yokohama. She was appointed as a member of the Advisory Group on Gender Issues (AGGI) of UNHABITAT. She was selected by GovInsider Asia as one of the prominent women whose work makes an impact in the Asia Pacific in 2018.
Dr. Lucia Husenicova
Dr. Husenicova is a Lecturer at the Department of security studies of the Faculty of Political Science and International Relations at the Matej Bel University in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia. She is also a Research Fellow and a Member of the board of the Central European Institute of Asian Studies in Bratislava.

Dr. Odete Costa
Dr. Costa is Portuguese who was born in France and raised in Canada. She is the Founder and President of the women’s organization Movimento Lírio Azul in Portugal. She received several important awards and honors in Portugal and abroad for her role as a volunteer in non-profit organizations and charities and in recognition for her fight against poverty and social exclusion.
