DMZ as Future Peace Zone in Korean Peninsula Webinar

In 2021 the Republic of Korea commemorates the 71st Anniversary of the Korean War. Many steps have been taken by civil society organizations to reunify and bring peace to the two countries. WFWPI will introduce speakers who have been continuously working to promote positive change and share their works related to the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

SPEAKERS:

Dr. Jongchoon WooDr. Woo, a Korean forester and educator, received his Ph.D. in Forest Management from the Freiburg University in Germany. He was awarded the DMZ Peace prize,  the Society Service Grand Prize (educational sector) for educational excellence through his contribution to the realization of green environment education. Currently, he serves as Professor Emeritus at Kangwon National University in South Korea.

Dr. Jongchoon Woo

Dr. Woo, a Korean forester and educator, received his Ph.D. in Forest Management from the Freiburg University in Germany. He was awarded the DMZ Peace prize, the Society Service Grand Prize (educational sector) for educational excellence through his contribution to the realization of green environment education. Currently, he serves as Professor Emeritus at Kangwon National University in South Korea.

Dr. Seung-ho LeeDr. Lee is President of The DMZ Forum, Inc., a US-registered non-profit organization that aims to transform the Korean DMZ into an International Peace Zone. He was Adjunct Professor and Senior Researcher at the New York University and graduated from the School of Public Service. He also worked for the New York State Legislative Commission on Critical Transportation Choices. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the State University of New York at Albany.

Dr. Seung-ho Lee

Dr. Lee is President of The DMZ Forum, Inc., a US-registered non-profit organization that aims to transform the Korean DMZ into an International Peace Zone. He was Adjunct Professor and Senior Researcher at the New York University and graduated from the School of Public Service. He also worked for the New York State Legislative Commission on Critical Transportation Choices. He holds a Ph.D. degree in Political Science from the State University of New York at Albany.

Dr. Chun-Fang WuDr. Wu has been working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow and Adjunct Assistant Professor at the Peace Research Center of National Quemoy University in Taiwan after getting a Ph.D. in Sociology at Seoul National University in South Korea. Her doctoral thesis explored how Kinmen island repositions in cross-strait relations and play a role in maintaining exchanges from the perspective of cross-strait tourism exchanges. Further explore the peace process between China and Taiwan, and the role of Kinmen as a peace promotion media.

Dr. Chun-Fang Wu

The Role of Women in Conflict Resolution and Peacebuilding

We will explore the challenges and victories of movements in conflict zones across the world to understand the capacity and challenges involved for women and youth when they take an active role in leading efforts for reconciliation and conflict transformation. Panelists will present their best practice successes in the decision-making processes that have contributed to effectively tackling the enormous crisis in their diverse areas of responsibility.

She is dedicated to supporting and funding initiatives that mitigate the effects of war, disease, poverty, and discrimination. For her work to uplift orphans and women living with HIV/AIDS from marginalization to self-resilience, she was awarded the 2019 Global Impact Award by WellAware. In 2015 she was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award by her alma mater, the University of Denver.

She has been working in urban development and related fields for more than 15 years. She began her career at Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and afterward CITYNET in Yokohama. She was appointed as a member of the Advisory Group on Gender Issues (AGGI) of UNHABITAT. She was selected by GovInsider Asia as one of the prominent women whose work makes an impact in the Asia Pacific in 2018.
